Divide money into pots, spend only what is in the pot. The constraint is the entire mechanism.

Envelope budgeting is about as old as paper money. You divide your income into category pots at the start of the period and spend only what is in the relevant pot. Empty envelope, no more spending in that category.
Most budgeting methods tell you what you should spend and then rely on you remembering, at the moment of spending, what you decided weeks ago. Envelopes remove the memory step. The limit is visible at the point of decision.
That is also why cash envelopes work better than people expect: handing over physical notes provides feedback that tapping a card does not.
Cash is impractical for rent, online purchases and anything recurring. The digital version keeps the same category-balance logic without the cash — you lose the tactile feedback, and gain a record and the ability to use it for everything.
Goodbudget is the best-known dedicated envelope app, and its free tier is genuinely usable. Alfie is zero-based rather than strictly envelope, but the practical experience — categories with balances you check before spending — is close.
