Alfie is a quiet, rules-based guide. When it tells you what you are safe to spend, that number is arithmetic on figures you entered — income, minus bills, minus what you have assigned, minus what is coming. You can check it on paper.
The Apple and Android editions provide no generative AI advice. Android is coming soon. Nothing about your budget is sent to an AI model: no model reads your entries, and no prompt containing your finances leaves your device.
Reasonable question — text recognition is often lumped in with AI. On iPhone and iPad, the Apple edition can use live-camera capture with on-device recognition. On Mac, use photo import or manual entry;live-camera scanning is not available. The coming-soon Android edition also processes receipt capture on device. Android receipt images stay local and are not synchronized. There is no server or language model involved, and you review and fix everything before an entry is saved.
Sending a budget to a model means sending it somewhere. Once your spending leaves your device it is subject to someone else's retention policy, someone else's breach, and someone else's change of terms. Keeping the logic simple and local is what makes the privacy promise checkable rather than a claim you have to take on trust.
The honest cost: Alfie will not spot a pattern you did not ask about or write you a personalised summary. It does arithmetic, clearly, on your numbers.
